The UK
Scotland is one of four nations which form the United Kingdom (the other three are England, Wales and Northern Ireland). The area of Scotland is 79 000 km2. The population is about 5,000,000 people. The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh. Scotland has six cities. The official language is English.
The national flower is the thistle. A person from Scotland is called a Scot, or described as Scottish. The word "Scotch" applies only to things - for example, whisky, Scotch eggs, Scotch beef. You shouldn’t refer to Scotland as England, or to Scottish as English - it is very likely to cause serious offense! They are very proud people. Scotland has rich and strong culture. Scotland has also produced some of the greatest scientists of the world including the inventors of the television, telephone and penicillin. It was Scottish scientists who created Dolly, the cloned sheep. Scotland is known the world over for whisky, haggis, porridge. Scotland is also noted for its lochs (this name is generally used for lakes in Scotland).
Although it is similar to England it has identity of its own. This identity goes deeper than the kilt and the bagpipe. Bagpipes are known to have been played in Scotland in the 14th century. The Scots have worn kilts for centuries but today's kilts look little like those worn by our ancestors. Today Scotsmen wear kilts in place of trousers, but for their ancestors the kilt covered their whole body from their knees to their shoulders. The woollen cloth of the kilt would be belted at the waist and then wrapped around their torso and fastened at the left shoulder. In Scotland each Clan has its own tartans to distinguish its members from other people. Tartans are used to make kilts, trousers, scarves. Each tartan is a design of different blocks and lines of colour that cross at right angles to create a chequered appearance. Highland Games are one of the great spectacles of Scotland where athletes, musicians and dancers come together to compete for prizes and honour. Most Highland Games feature Scottish country dancing and piping competitions as well as foot races and, very often, cycle races.
Ghosts haunt the wonderful castles of Scotland, the lakes hide mysterious monsters. I’d like to visit Scotland, because it is an interesting country with its own traditions and customs.

Different ways of traveling: advantages and disadvantages.
It is very interesting to travel. Many people love traveling. They travel to see other countries, to know more about their traditions and culture, to enjoy visiting places of interest.
There are many ways of traveling: by air, by train, by ship, by car. Everyone chooses their favorite way. If you like to watch the scenery and you enjoy the process of traveling, it will be easier to travel by car. But traveling by car is not very comfortable if you travel long distances. It takes a lot of time and money.
To travel by train is also exciting. It is usually chosen by people who have enough time to get from one place to another. Train is a cheap means of traveling. Modern trains have very comfortable seats and people can sleep during the journey.
Traveling by ship is also very popular now. It is very pleasant to see the rise and fall of the waves, to feel the fresh sea wind blowing in your face and hear the cry of sea gulls. But some people get sea-sick and traveling by ship is difficult for them.
Traveling by plane also has its advantages and disadvantages. Traveling by plane is preferred by people who haven’t got much time and they must quickly get to another city or country. Modern planes have very comfortable seats in all cabins, and there are first class, business and economy class cabins. During the flight you can have something to drink and to eat. You can also read some free magazines and newspapers. But traveling by plane has its minuses, too. It is the most expensive form of transport. If the luggage weighs more than 20 kilograms, you have to pay extra.
I love traveling. My favorite way is air traveling because it is very comfortable, quick and amazing. (c) Генералова Н.Б.

Famous people of Great Britain.
Great Britain, and Scotland in particular, is the birthplace of many men of literature and science. Alexander Fleming invented penicillin. Walter Scott was a great master of historical novels like Rob Roy and Ivanhoe. Robert Louis Stevenson is known for his stories and books of adventure. His books The Black Arrow, Treasure Island, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde are famous all over the world.
I would like to speak about a famous Scottish poet Robert Burns.
Robert Burns was born in 1759 and was the eldest of 7 children, growing up in a life of poverty and hard farm work. His father made sure that his sons were well educated and hired a private tutor to teach them English, French, Latin, and even Philosophy.
When Robert was not having lessons he would help his father on the farm. In his spare time he started to write poetry. In 1784 Robert’s father died and Robert had to support the family. The farm was a failure as the crops wouldn’t grow. To make matters worse, Robert fell in love with Jean Arma. They wanted to marry but Jean’s father disapproved. Burns was a poor farmer with little money and not good enough for his daughter.
Burns was fed up and planned to emigrate to Jamaica. He decided to print some of his poems in order to make money for the voyage. When Poems Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect were
Published, Burns became famous overnight .
Burns didn’t just write poems, he was Scotland’s first collector of folk songs. In 1787 he set off on a journey around Scotland, writing down fragments of old songs like Auld Lang Syne, often rewriting them into the versions we know today.
In 1788 Burns and Jean Arma married and went to live at Ellisland Farm. There he wrote his famous Tam O’Shanter – a tale of a farmer who, after a night of drinking, stumbles across some dancing witches on his way home.
Burns and his family left Ellisland and moved to Dumfreys in 1793. My Love is Like a Red Red Rose was written soon after.
By 1796 Burns had become dangerously ill and on the 21-st of July he died at the age of 37. Scotland lost one of its best loved poets and a national hero. Burns wanted to be the poet of Scotland and his dream came true. Today his poems are loved by millions all over the world.

Choosing a сareer.
They say that there are over 2000 professions in the world, so it is not an easy task to choose the right occupation in life. Choosing a career is a serious examination for one’s abilities and character. When doing it some young people follow their own choice, while others follow their parents’ or teachers’ advice.
What are the main reasons for choosing your future profession? First of all, it should seem interesting to you. An exciting job that you really like is an important factor of happiness in life. Then you should consider the problem of earning a living. The most fascinating job will bring no satisfaction if it is poorly paid. And there is the problem of unemployment: you should choose a profession that will produce a job.
What do I want to be when I leave school? A few years ago it was difficult for me to give a definite answer. As the years passed I changed my mind a lot of times about which science or field of industry to specialise in. A couple of years ago I wanted to be a doctor. I thought it was a very noble profession. I wanted to help people who had problems with health. I knew that a doctor should be kind and attentive to people, responsible and reasonable, honest and prudent. I did my best to develop good qualities in myself.
Now I’m thinking of becoming a teacher. To be a good teacher you must be well-educated and well-informed. An ignorant teacher teaches ignorance, a bored teacher teaches boredom. But a good teacher develops in his pupils the burning desire to know and love for the truth and beauty. As John Steinbeck once said, a great teacher is a great artist. Teaching might even be the greatest of arts. It’s a great responsibility to bring up children. I think that’s the reason why teachers are deeply respected.
More and more people realise that every educated person should know a foreign language. That’s why I’m going to become an English teacher. I liked English when we first started learning it, and it is still one of my favourite subjects. English is used by millions of people all over the world and it is a powerful tool of international communication. I will try to enter the department of foreign languages at University.

Outstanding people of Russia.
Peter the First, or Peter the Great, was one of the most outstanding rulers and reformers in Russian history. Peter was a healthy, lively and clever child. He loved military games and enjoyed carpentry, blacksmithing and printing. He was married at the age of 17. At first Peter ruled together with his brother Ivan and his sister Sofya. In 1696 he became a sole ruler and in 1721 he became the Emperor of Russia. Peter I is famous for drawing Russia further to the East. He also transferred the capital from Moscow to St. Petersburg. Peter travelled much in Western Europe and tried to carry western customs and habits to Russia. He introduced western technologies. He completely changed the Russian government and military system, he increased the power of the monarch and reduced the power of the boyars and the church. In foreign policy, Peter waged a war with Turkey (1695-1696), the Great Northern War with Sweden (1700-1721) and a war with Persia (1722-1723). In these wars he wanted to get access to the Baltic, the Black and the Caspian Sea. He managed to get to the shores of the Baltic and the Caspian Sea. Peter I played a great role in Russian history. After his death Russia was much more secure and progressive than it had been before his reign.
Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov was a great Russian scientist and writer. He studied chemistry, physics, astronomy, geography, art, philology and others. Lomonosov was also a poet, who created the basis of the modern Russian literary language. Lomonosov was born on the 19-th of November, 1711 in the village of Denisovka, not far from Arkhangelsk, in the North of Russia. When Mikhail was ten years old his father began to take him to the sea. The dangerous life of a fisherman taught Lomonosov to observe natural phenomena. But he did not want to be a fisherman. Learning was his real passion. He spent every spare moment with books. In 1730 Lomonosov left the village and went to Moscow, where he entered the Slavic Greek Latin Academy. Lomonosov lived on three kopecs a day, but he made rapid progress. He was extremely hardworking and persistent. Five years later he graduated at the top of his class. After that he studied in St. Petersburg and then went to Germany. There he learnt German and studied philosophy, mathematics, chemistry and began writing poetry. In Germany Lomonosov fell in love with Elisabeth Christine Zilch. They got married in 1740. Lomonosov returned to Russia in 1741. He worked in the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 1745 Lomonosov was made a professor. He was the first Russian member of the Academy. In 1755 Lomonosov joined his patron Count Ivan Shuvalov in founding Moscow State University, which is named after the scientist now. Lomonosov died in 1765 in St. Petersburg at the age of 53. He is remembered as a patriot, a talented scientist and an outstanding personality. Alexander Pushkin described Lomonosov as a person of formidable willpower and keen scientific mind.

Ways of spending free time.
People spend their free time in different ways. Some go to sport centres to keep fit, others go out with friends, still others enjoy watching new films at the cinema or various performances at the theatre.
Millions of people spend their free time travelling. They travel to see different countries, modern cities and the ruins of ancient towns, to enjoy picturesque places or just for a change of scene. It is always interesting to discover new things, to see different ways of life, to meet people, to taste different food, to listen to different musical rhythms.
Almost everyone collects something at some period of their lives: toys, stickers, postcards, books, stamps, coins and so on. Some collections have no value. Others become so large and valuable that they are housed in museums and galleries. Many world famous collections started with one or two items. Some people enjoy making things. They devote their free time to drawing, painting, making models, designing costumes, handicrafts. Sir Winston Churchill was a famous amateur painter.
Those who love music learn to play musical instruments. Reading can make a great hobby, too. Spending free time with a book can be exciting, relaxing, informative or thought provoking.
No matter what kind of hobby a person has, he always has the opportunity of learning from it. By finding out about the things he is interested in, he is adding to what he knows. Learning things can be the most exciting aspect of any hobby.

What qualities of character you would like to develop in yourself.
Everybody wants to live a happy life: to have friends and a family, to make a career, to be respected by others. To achieve these goals a person must have certain qualities of character and get rid of other ones.
We admire courageous, intelligent, honest, hardworking and persistent people who set a good example to others. We study their biographies and want to be like them. I admire Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov because of his industry, decisiveness and persistence. He worked hard to develop his abilities. His character made him a successful scientist and an outstanding personality.
Some people are not famous but they are admired by those who know them. I admire my aunt because she was a hardworking and optimistic person. Her life was not easy but I don’t remember her complaining. I also try to do my duties well and to overcome hardships. If you have done a difficult task, you feel satisfied or even proud of yourself.
Kindness, wisdom and understanding are among positive qualities, too. They attract people. It is pleasant to communicate with a person who can understand your joys and sorrows and can give you good advice when you are in trouble. Wisdom comes with age and experience, but it is necessary to treat people kindly. I try to learn to understand others without judging all their actions and ideas. It is also important to learn to be honest and faithful to those you love. I do my best to keep my friends’ secrets and I don’t break my promises to them. I want my friends to trust me as I trust them.
In conclusion I’d like to say that it is necessary to develop positive qualities in yourself because your success in life depends on your character.

What should be done to protect the Earth.
Problems of the Earth.
We have spent thousands of years fighting for our survival. Yet now we have discovered that our planet is under threat and, to make matters worse, it’s all our fault. The rainforests are dying, rare plants and animals are disappearing, people are dying of hunger, rivers and seas are being polluted. It’s time we woke up to these problems and started repairing the damage.
One of the main problems is the destruction of the rainforests in South America. They are home to half the world’s species and to millions of people. Moreover, the rainforests clean the air by absorbing carbon dioxide and giving out oxygen. The trees are being cut down for paper or to make room for cattle farms. As a result, birds and animals lose their home and die. This destruction is also bringing about changes in the climate, air pollution, flooding, drought and famine. It we continue to burn and cut down the rainforests as we are doing now, the earth will never be the same again.
Another big problem is water pollution. Do you like swimming in the sea or drinking a cool glass of water on a hot day? These simple pleasures may soon become a thing of the past. Factories are polluting rivers and lakes with dangerous chemicals. Oil tankers are releasing thick, black oil into the oceans. Tons and tons of industrial and domestic waste are poured into the seas. Consequently, sea life is threatened with extinction.
Air pollution is another important issue. The cars and factories in and around cities are giving off dangerous fumes. In the past few years, more and more people than ever before have developed allergies and breathing problems. If we don’t do something now, our cities will become impossible to live in.
Fortunately, it is not too late to solve these problems. We have the time, the money and even the technology to prepare the way for a better, cleaner and safer future. We can plant trees and adopt animals. We can create parks for endangered species. We can put pressure on those in power to take action. Together we can save the planet. All we need to do is open our eyes and act immediately.

Choosing an Occupation
One of the most difficult problems a young person faces is deciding what to do about a career. There are individuals, of course, who from the time they are six years old "know" that they want to be doctors or pilots or fire fighters, but the majority of us do not get around to making a decision about an occupation or career until somebody or something forces us to face the problem.
Choosing an occupation takes time, and there are a lot of things you have to think about as you try to decide what you would like to do. You may find that you will have to take special courses to qualify for a particular kind of work, or may find out that you will need to get some actual work experience to gain enough knowledge to qualify for a particular job.
Fortunately, there are a lot of people you can turn to for advice and help in making your decision. At most schools, there are teachers who are professionally qualified to counsel you and to give detailed information about job qualifications. And you can talk over your ideas with family members and friends who are always ready to listen and to offer suggestions.
But even if you get other people involved in helping you make a decision, self evaluation is an important part of the decision-making process.

Crimes and society.
There have been crimes and criminals for many centuries. Nowadays the crime rate speeds up and we hear the chilling statistics of violence, murders and assaults, robbery, burglary, sexual offences, thefts and smuggling despite the fact that a lot of money is spend to defend people and their property.
For ages scientists, philosophers and doctors have been desperately trying to find out what makes people commit crimes. Perhaps the major cause of crime nowadays is the widening gap between the wealthy and the poor. Many of the poor live in crowded city areas. They don’t have time to look after their children and their kids mix in the street gangs, where are very often caught red handed in mugging, burglary or drug dealing. On the other hand, the rich commit crimes for the sake of easy money, drugs or to beat boredom and get an adrenaline buzz. Some people believe that TV violence causes crime.
The authorities light up dark streets, place CCTV cameras and sentence the criminals to life imprisonment or even death penalties. The question of crime prevention and especially kinds of punishment is a very shaky one. Some people think that criminals who have committed senior offences such as murder definitely deserve death penalty as an example for others not to do the same. Others disagree because of different reasons. Some people consider it too mild, because the accused won’t suffer of understanding his guilt. The others suppose that the trial may make a mistake and sentence the innocent to death. Moreover, there are a lot of arguments about the way of execution. Even those kinds that are considered to be painless may cause long and torturous death.
So what should be done to prevent crimes? I believe that policemen should be given a professional training. Children should be busy with extracurricular activities in order not to spend too much time with bad companies. In order not to become a victim of the crime you shouldn’t go through dark streets and you’d better always lock your door. And of course one should never try drugs.

The advantages and disadvantages of the net.
I believe that although digital technologies have improved the life of humankind in the way of working with information, they have caused a lot of problems.
Digital technologies may be harmful for health, because the bright light of displays can damage people’s eyesight. Doctors claim that electromagnetic emanation influences people’s brain.
Digital technologies shorten the distances and give a lot of opportunities for communication. But do people use the Internet only to communicate with those who are far from us? We are losing the need for interaction, so that many people continue playing tablets or surfing the net even when they have fun with friends.
The Internet stores all the information the humanity has been collecting for hundreds of years, but it is rather difficult to check the accuracy of the quotes and data presented there. Besides, due to the overwhelming abundance of the data, modern people have lost the ability to analyze information and to properly distinguish between what is true and what is false.
Digital technologies are useful in education, because they give a spur to self-development and serve as an instrument for inclusive education. They are supposed to be widely used in education both in English-speaking countries and Russia. But I’m not sure that people have learnt to make technologies work in their benefit?
Internet is meant to be free but it also is a good instrument for stealing data, which is now even more expensive than material things. It is also a convenient tool to control people's thoughts and opinions.
Gadgets provide us with a way to quickly and easily create various images, music and other works. Such opportunities of the modern technology diminish the material and even personal value of these creations.
To conclude with, I should say that there are a lot of doubts of constant using the Net, gadgets and devices. First, children got the easy access to the information they are not supposed to know. The Net is becomes the way of a person’s life and it is very harmful for his or her health. Many teens spend a lot of time surfing the Net and spoiling their eyes and gaining weight. Online games are proved to be very addictive. Of course we should use digital technologies, but we shouldn’t forget that technologies are meant to serve us, but not the vice versa. We shouldn’t forget about the real world being deceived by the virtual one.

What traits of character you would like to develop in yourself.
Every person wants to be successful in life. But happiness depends much on the person himself. You need to work hard mentally and physically in order to lead a happy and healthy life.
To my mind success can be achieved on 3 levels: family, job and hobby.
In order to get a job you will be satisfied with you should first of all think about the qualities you need to get a good position. As for me I want to be a doctor. A doctor should be reliable and trustworthy. I’m trying to do all the work on time, to do everything I promised and not to promise anything I can’t do. You also need to be hardworking and self-motivated. You have to study hard because except usual 5 years of university education you have to take additional training courses. If a future doctor doesn’t study hard it can cause even death of his patients. I study really hard and take extra lessons on the subjects I need.
To be happy in your private life you should be positive. If a person doesn’t think positively, it can cause a depression. Nobody wants a friend or a relative who is always nagging and complaining, so I try to look on the bright side all the time. I deal with optimistic people and develop a good sense of humour by memorizing funny stories and jokes. I also like energetic people, as it is boring to be a couch potato. So we often go out.
As for a hobby, a person should be able to express himself. So you need to work on your creativity. Creative people can easily find an unusual and interesting way to cope with the problem. To develop creativity and sense of beauty I go to music school and sing a lot. I also look after my physical state and train in fitness clubs to be fit and healthy.
